The plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) is the major player in mediating the adaptation of the plant to stress.
ABA was originally used as a defoliant and noted for its role in leaf abcission. It was later found to regulate a number of processes associated with seed maturation and germination. Currently it is the model compound for studying abiotic stress resistance in plants.
Features:
1. It plays role in inhibition of cell growth
2. ABA amount increases in developing seeds and promotes dormancy
3. If leaves experience water stress, ABA amounts increase immediately, causing the stomata to close
4. It induces seeds to synthesize storage proteins and inhibits the affect of gibberellins on stimulating de novo synthesis of α-amylase
5. It induces gene transcription especially for proteinase inhibitors in response to wounding which may explain an apparent role in pathogen defense
