Actin is the major protein of the microfilament cytoskeletal system and is a key protein in various cell motility processes. All eukaryotic cells express actin, which often constitutes as much as 50% of total cellular protein. β-actin is one of six different actin isoforms which is the best protein to use as a loading control.

Optimal working dilutions should be determined experimentally by the investigator. Suggested starting dilutions are as follows: western blot (1:1000-1:2000), immunofluorescence and immunocytochemistry (1:200-1:800).
